It was an honor to present at the Grace Hopper Celebration this year on Power BI, and for my co-presenters to speak on Microsoft Fabric and Copilot! The Grace Hopper Celebration continues to be one of the most inspiring gatherings of women in technology, and having the opportunity to share knowledge with this incredible community was truly special.

The Workshop: Empowering Data Analysis with Microsoft’s Unified Platform

Our workshop focused on three interconnected technologies that are transforming how organizations work with data:

Power BI: Transforming Data into Insights

In my segment, I walked attendees through the fundamentals and advanced capabilities of Power BI, Microsoft’s business intelligence platform. We explored:

  • Building effective data models that serve as the foundation for meaningful analysis
  • Creating impactful visualizations that tell compelling data stories
  • Best practices for report design that prioritize user experience and accessibility
  • Direct Lake mode and modern storage options for optimal performance
  • Real-world use cases demonstrating how organizations leverage Power BI for decision-making

The hands-on components allowed participants to see firsthand how Power BI democratizes data access, enabling both technical and non-technical users to derive insights from complex datasets.

Microsoft Fabric: The Unified Data Platform

My co-presenters showcased Microsoft Fabric’s comprehensive approach to data management, highlighting:

  • OneLake’s zero-ETL architecture that simplifies data integration
  • Unified workspace bringing together data engineering, data science, and business intelligence
  • Real-Time Intelligence capabilities for streaming analytics
  • Integration across the data estate from ingestion to visualization
  • Governance and security features built into the platform

The demonstration illustrated how Fabric eliminates traditional silos between data tools, creating a seamless experience for data professionals across different roles.

Copilot: AI-Powered Productivity

The Copilot segment explored how AI is revolutionizing productivity within the Microsoft ecosystem:

  • Natural language queries for data exploration in Power BI
  • AI-assisted report creation that accelerates development workflows
  • Automated insights that surface patterns and anomalies
  • Copilot in Fabric for data engineering and transformation tasks
  • Enterprise-ready AI with built-in security and compliance

Attendees were particularly excited to see how Copilot can help users at all skill levels work more efficiently with data, from writing DAX formulas to generating entire reports based on conversational prompts.

Workshop Highlights

The session featured:

  • Live demonstrations of Power BI report building and Fabric workflows
  • Interactive Q&A where attendees asked questions about real-world implementation challenges
  • Best practices sharing drawn from production deployments across various industries
  • Networking opportunities for attendees to connect with the presenters and each other
  • Resource sharing including documentation, learning paths, and community links

The Grace Hopper Experience

Beyond the technical content, presenting at GHC 2025 was inspiring for many reasons:

  • Diverse perspectives from attendees representing different industries, roles, and backgrounds
  • Meaningful conversations about career growth, technical challenges, and the future of data and AI
  • Community building that extends far beyond the conference itself
  • Mentorship opportunities to support the next generation of women in technology

The energy and enthusiasm from attendees reinforced why events like Grace Hopper Celebration are so vital for our industry. Every question asked, every insight shared, and every connection made contributes to building a more inclusive and innovative tech community.

Continuing the Conversation: Mentorship Sessions

Thank you to everyone who attended the session and to the Power BI team for their support!

Following the workshop, I hosted two mentorship sessions for those interested in additional guidance or who had questions from the workshop. These sessions provided a more intimate setting for:

  • Deep-dive discussions on specific Power BI and Fabric topics
  • Career advice for those interested in data, AI, and product management
  • Technical guidance on implementing learnings in their own organizations
  • One-on-one connections for ongoing mentorship relationships
